Foreplay is the warm-up: kissing, touching, talking, undressing at a human speed. Arousal in many bodies needs minutes, not a leap to penetration. Lubrication, erection, and mood all lag behind a calendar reminder that says have sex.
The word can sound like a compulsory opening act before the real show. That hierarchy leaves people out. For a lot of couples the so-called foreplay is the part that actually works. Intercourse can be optional. Touch that stays at the neck for a while is not a delay. It is content.
Context counts. A fight in the kitchen does not vanish because someone lights a candle. Repair might be the real foreplay on that night. So might a nap.
Ask what helps the engine catch. Then do that longer than feels efficient.
